GERARD Allan is cooking up a treat at Salamander Bay.

The 26-year-old Horizons Golf Resort fourth-year apprentice has won the title of Hunter Apprentice Chef of the Year for commercial Western cuisine.

He will receive his prize at the Hunter Regional Apprenticeship and Traineeship Advisory Committee Awards on July 25.

It has been a big week for Mr Allan, who was also notified of winning gold in the NSW Restaurant and Catering Competition for a fourth-year Hunter apprentice.

The event was held in April.

A second-year apprentice chef at Horizons, Aaron Sabrowski, also won a medal bronze in the same competition.

Mr Allan, who is scheduled to complete his apprenticeship in six months, wants to broaden his international cooking experience.

``I'm going to base myself in London and work my way through Europe learning as much as I can about the trade," he said.
